Atheism Articulated

Sometimes I am challenged about being a devout atheist. What does that mean? Do I have any moral foundation at all? Where do I find purpose? The answer is often difficult for me to clearly formulate.

Then, out of the blue, comes a far more eloquent articulate voice to say what I cannot. It was a true 'driveway moment' when I heard Penn Jillette on This I Believe on NPR. This is old, but if you haven't read it or heard it, check out. I think every atheist and secular humanist should memorize it.

Edit: Thanks to Scott for catching my bad link.

I believe you meant to post this link.

God means different things to different people. To me, God is a representation of life. Nothing more, nothing less. Therefore to me, atheism is impossible.

I certainly, though, respect the right of everyone to define God however they like, and believe/disbelieve as they wish. We're all living together on this rock, and we all have to deal with helping each other survive, after all, no matter how you try to spin it.

I don't quite see the reason to assign a loaded word like 'God' to something which already has a perfectly respectable name like life. Assigning a name just gives people something to fight over. Maybe that is the point.
